It's the one I mentioned earlier, as McCall has goes up against his former co-workers in the CIA to save the life of an investigative journalist.Īnd I have to say that it's somewhat sad that McCall's CIA background in dirty tricks works just as well today as it did in the mid-1980s. The first episode of season one, Prelude, is my favorite. This is a shame because I think season two is the show's best season as the writers finally knew the character well and hit full stride. Unfortunately, so far only season one is available on DVD.

There's a very Catholic thread of redemption that runs through all four seasons, which is brought to the forefront in an episode where McCall is called into a case to help by an old friend, a Catholic priest. It's the relationships between McCall, Control, Mickey and Scott that tie the episodes together and provide a character arc for McCall. William Zabka, who made a name for himself as the bully in many 80s movies, played McCall's estranged teenage son, Scott. Keith Szarabajka, possibly best known as the vampire hunter who stole Angel's child in Angel, played McCall's able assistant, Mickey Kostmayer. Robert Lansing, Gary Seven from Star Trek, was the enigmatic Control who still worked for the CIA and yet was McCall's friend. The cast regulars also include names you might recognize. Robert Mitchum also guest-starred in a two-part episode halfway through the show's life but, sadly, they were not particularly good episodes as they were written on the fly to fill-in as Woodward recovered from a heart attack. Some insiders at CBS dubbed the show "1-800-Call-Daddy" initially and there's certainly an element of paternal oversight as McCall helps out his clients, which range from a teenage boy being bullied to a female cop caught in corruption to a missing reporter grabbed by the CIA.īut it's not just Woodward and these archetypical elements that draw me to the show. He's also able to project menace as well as despair and guilt, sometimes in the same episode. Even when the dialogue of some of the episodes of the Equalizer becomes a little over-the-top, he's able to sell it. Woodward has one of those terrific, resonant voices that so many British actors seem to have. In that movie, as in the Equalizer, Woodward played a very dangerous but cultured man who even quotes Byron to his fellow soldiers. The part of Robert McCall was written for Woodward, probably best known in America for his role in Breaker Morant.

The answer, I later discovered, is that the original producers had seen the British show Callen, a spy series in which Woodward starred as the enigmatic lead character.
